It was February 2009, and I still remember where I was when I got an email from my friend Shane. His email was sent to a group of his friends, informing all of us that his longtime partner Suzie’s cancer was back after 8 years. It had returned with a vengeance, with tumors in multiple locations throughout her body. I had known Shane for 2 years at that time. He managed a local scuba shop we frequent, and we had become friends. My partner Kristin and I had only had dinner once with Shane and Suzie, and before getting Shane’s email I was unaware that Suzie had a history of cancer.
